Holograms, Past, Present, Future - Seminar 1
Holograms, Past, Present, and Future
Thursday, October 16th, 12 pm - 2 pm EST
Fee: $50

In this first seminar, we will explore some of the works included in previous shows at the HoloCenter gallery in Kingston. We will look at multi-colored images of holograms that were recorded on red-sensitive silver halide film with either a pulsed ruby laser or a Helium-Neon gas laser.
We will explore how these artists managed to create complex multicolored images using only a red laser. Exploring some powerful pulsed holographic works by Ana Maria Nicholson, a rainbow hologram by Rudie Berkhout and multi-colored reflection holograms by John Kaufman and Melissa Crenshaw we will look at the major techniques used to create color holograms while only using a red laser.
From there we will move on to the "Present" and look at very recent DCG Holograms created by August Muth, more DCG works by 3 students of August's, Dora Tass, Michael Crawford and Joan Stango. DCG has the potential to make multi-colored holographic images using only a green laser, you can coat your own holographic plates and not have to purchase very expensive coated silver halide plates that are only produced in Europe. However, there are important characteristics of DCG that require specialized techniques and August Muth has opened a door to novel techniques with this extraordinary medium.

We will also take a look at the state of the art of Digital Holography through the work of Paula Dawson, Jacques Desbiens and other artists and the various facilities that are available to output your digital content.
We will explore the state of the art of Fine Art Holography including the exciting potential of photopolymer emulsions and their self-developing characteristics. Holography as a Fine Art medium is changing. Join us for a look at the techniques that are available to us now.

The seminar will be for 90 minutes followed by 30 minutes of question time.
