Seminar Series

Self-Portrait Hologram of Margaret Benyon
Seminar Series
January 2026
Holograms, Past, Present, Future - Seminar 1

In this seminar we will explore the techniques used in the early days of holography to produce multi-colored holograms, white light reflection as well as rainbow holograms, pulsed portraits as well as recordings of still objects.

Continuing on to the second half of our seminar we will look at new work created using Dichromated Gelatin hand-coated emulsions and digital holograms. Further discussion will explore the latest options of recording holograms in photopolymer emulsions and the blessings of self-developing film.

Pulsed Laser Holographic Portraiture - Seminar 2

Exploring the realm of holographic portraiture, we enter the world of pulsed lasers, particularly pulsed ruby lasers. Exploring the issues of creating images of living subjects we will look at the use of makeup, skin color and tone under red laser light, of spatial composition, capturing the magic of a moment in time, engaging with your subject, being present for your subject.

Further discussion will focus on the changing materials for recording pulsed holograms and the changing nature of pulsed lasers. As with all forms of Holography change is happening.

We will look in depth at the work of Ana Maria Nicholson, Co-Founder of the HoloCenter and some of her incredible body of work.

DCG Holograms - Seminar 3

Dichromated Gelatin or DCG is a recording medium that can be hand-coated onto sheets of glass, as in the early days of photography, - although with tighter control over humidity. This technique of coating and shooting your own recordings has been mastered by Holographic Artist, August Muth, in his studio at the Light Foundry in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

August has evolved a school of artists who have worked with him in his studio. These artists are now evolving their own studios in various locations around the world and expanding the application of this quite amazing recording material.

This workshop will explore the various ways this revival of an old recording material is taking a new generation of artists into a wave of creative exploration. It will also explore the power of being able to control the production of your own recording material.
